Workshop for students of Extended Contemporary Dance and teachers of the ATD (Academie voor Theater en Dans), University of the Arts Amsterdam).

We would like to invite you for the pre-workshop Amphibious Soul that takes place at the therapeutic swimming pool of Reade at the Overtoom in Amsterdam at Tuesday evening the 8th of April 2025 (19.00 – 21.00).

The pre-workshop will consist of a two hour workshop in the water where we will explore the difference between moving on land and in water. You will experience how movement on land evolved out of our 4 billion year heritage of living in water and how it is still reminiscently present in moving on land. We will explore a constructive series of procedures and exercises building up from floating, organizing movement through pulsating (amoebe, jellyfish), streamlining (fish), creating opposition (tetrapod, mammal) and undulation (fully aquatic mammals) all the way to the very technical and articulated modern swimming strokes (semi aquatic mammals, humans).

The participants to the pre-workshop are expected to then also join the workshop Amphibious Soul during the afternoon workshop sessions on the Critical Somatics symposium on Thursday the 24th of April (13.45 – 15.00) together with other participants that have not had the experience in the pool.

In this workshop we will connect what we have learned and experienced in the water to our moving on land. This will give more clarity to principles of organizing and moving the body used in the Alexander technique like ‘head leads’, or ‘the back supporting the limbs’. For instance we will explore how the undulation (the dolphin or ‘butterfly’ movement) is still present in the simple movement from sitting to standing. By acknowledging and experiencing our ‘watery’ heritage in movements on land you will deepen your understanding of and ability to guide your movements.
Breath regulation is an important feature for all mammals in water. The work in the water will give you insights and experiences how not to interfere with breathing in activity.

The workshop in the swimming pool will be given by Stephan, the workshop on the symposium by Stephan and Hildegarde.
If you want to participate in the pre-workshop in the pool or if you have questions please send an email to Stephan: info@vrijzwemmen.com.
There is place for a maximum of eight participants. You don’t have to be a good swimmer, but being comfortable enough in the water to bring your face in water is recommended.
You have to register separately for the Amphibious Soul workshop on the symposium on the symposium 2025 website.
